Hair dye and pregnancy

Is it safe to color your hair during pregnancy?

Joyna - February 11

One time, when I went to the salon for a hair rebond and hair dye, the stylist asked me if I am pregnant or not cause she said it is not advisable for a pregnant woman to have a rebond and hair dye. She did not go any further for the reasons though but I think it is the chemicals that they are using that makes it unsafe for the pregnant woman.

Probably it is unsafe cause of the strong chemicals that you may breathe in while having the hair dye.

There has not been any evidence of hair dye causing birth defects but then we are not sure yet of its safety. So better be safe than sorry. Just postpone your hair dye on the later stage of your pregnancy or avoid it at all. Maybe some time when you already gave birth. You will still look good though even without the hair dye. :)

It is not safe Kaye to have hair color during your pregnancy especially if you are in the first trimester cause this is the time when all of your baby’s major organs are forming. Hair dye might absorb on your skin and hurt your baby.

There is no problem with hair dye and pregnancy. Only very little amount of hair dye gets absorbed through the skin and I don't think this little amount would be harmful to baby. So carry on with your beauty session. :)

Hi Kaye. Just use henna then in dying your hair. It is a natural hair dye and is considered safe to use during pregnancy.

Hi all. Thank you for all your information. I am just quite worried though just why I asked. Thanks, thanks. More info are encouraged.

If the chemical makes it unsafe then, just highlight or frost your hair instead. By doing so, the chemicals are not applied directly to your scalp therefore less hair dye will be absorbed through your skin. Isn't that a good idea?

As long as you rinse your hair thoroughly after coloring your hair, there's no threat at all. So worry less.

Yes, I have read a certain article that it's really safe to have hair dye during pregnancy. But on my part, I'm still afraid of doing it..

There have been so minimal studies on hair dye and pregnancy. So we don't have enough information to say whether or not hair dye could be dangerous in human pregnancies. Just be cautious about it. And read the chemical content of the hair dye to be used.

Hi there Kaye. You just choose a hair dye that will stay on your scalp for the least amount of time as possible. To avoid any complications.

Bea77 - February 12

Hair color is harmless, so go and get yourself some make over.

I suggest you go and see your doctor and ask about it cause we are of no experts. Just to be sure of your safety.

Kaye - February 12

Appreciate all your info but I agree that it is best to consult an expert. Thanks a lot.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), hair dyes are probably safe to use during pregnancy because so little dye is absorbed through the skin. However, it is still important to be cautious, therefore many health care providers recommend that pregnant women not use permanent hair dyes during the first three months.
