Eating as few as an extra 500 calories a day (a bagel with cream cheese) increases your odds of gaining to much weight during pregnancy by 10%. Gaining to much weight when pregnant can cause several pregnancy complications like the development of pre-eclampsia or of having an overweight baby. Gaining more than the recommended amount of weight during pregnancy also increases the risk that both mother and child will be obese later in life.
