New Emergency Contraception

Posted on Tue Jun 22, 2010 New Emergency Contraception
Ella is a new emergency contraception that may be approved soon by the FDA for use in the United States. Ella works by blocking the action of the hormone progesterone, a hormone that is needed to sustain a pregnancy. Women have for years been using birth control pills that also alter a woman’s use of progesterone to help prevent pregnancy. However, birth control pills raise the amount of progesterone in a woman’s body tricking her body into thinking it is already pregnant. The body then ceases to ovulate so as not to cause a double pregnancy. Ella instead hinders the body’s use of progesterone so that a pregnancy cannot occur even if the body does ovulate.
